Oprah always talks about the value of being your authentic self…find out who you are and OWN it. But for many in the world, it’s not always that simple. While life and society are telling us one thing – in whispers or sometimes, in louder voices – who you feel like inside might be something totally different. This journey gives us a look into the life of someone famous…working on becoming their authentic self and really, what this says about us as men and women and how it relates to the human spirit.
Throughout the doc, we get to know Chaz and Jenny, Chaz’s girlfriend of many years. The filmmakers try to help us understand a few things – the shift between hormones and emotions of women vs. men, the struggles of close relationships put under the stress of gender re-assignment, the challenges of addiction and sobriety in everyday life, and the emmense value of a support system.
The film takes us through the journey of Chaz’s breast removal…one of many changes that happen during this process. But really, the journey is much bigger than this. It’s one of love – of yourself, of life, and of those who are your heart family. And…it’s a little bit of “love of sandwiches” too.
Not all transgender transformations are equal…so be careful to see the story for it’s lessons and try not to find categories or stereotypes to frame it with. InsteaPowerful, heartwarming, loving and real, this documentary brings with it the lesson that being who you really are is not always easy…it’s not always peaceful…it’s not always possible…but it’s always worth the effort.
