It’s never a dull week with Beverly’s Full House. As relatives spilled in for a visit, Beverly was still all work. Now, in fairness, that is who she is. Family was important, but work had always trumped it in life. Here was how it went down. Beverly’s mom and sister come to town to spend some time with the family. Beverly then let the family know that she would be leaving in order to appear on an episode of Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model. Claiming that the show made mention of Anansa being a guest judge, the family wasn’t sure what to think. To make matters worse, the day happened to be the same day that Anansa and David were scheduled to have their family portrait taken….a gift from his mother that included a 6 month waiting list.
Beverly was true to herself and decided there was no way she was missing a chance to be on the show and was shocked that Anansa didn’t immediately drop everything. However, the problem (in my opinion) lied in Beverly’s communication. Once again, it felt as if the truth was somewhere in the murky waters. At first she said Anansa may be a guest judge, then she said they want her to make a guest appearance denying the previous on camera statement. It has to be hard for Anansa to trust her mom but I am so glad she is calling her on it. That is the first step to change.
Not wanting to miss the opportunity with four generations of women in the house, Beverly arranged for a photographer to come over and take photos of the family. It was such a great idea! The shoot was great. Take a look at this deleted scene.
The Top Model gig wasn’t the only issue surfacing this episode. Beverly wanted to discuss Anansa’s father…and this created tension. As they spoke with their life coach, he asked why it was important to Beverly. “I’d just like to know what I did to her. Let’s put it out there.” So at the urging of the coach, Anansa put it out there! Citing examples of how her mom acted irritated and disinterested when she would talk about her wedding plans…or how she called her mom to tell her she was pregnant and her mom’s response was “Why?” Clearly Beverly’s lack of interest in Anansa’s life upset her. After spilling the beans, the life coach simply replied “Wow. A lot going on here, um…it’s just in the interest of the schedule what we’ll do is in the next session, you, Beverly then get to share your narrative.” It was said and left to fester. I was shocked. It takes a lot for someone to open up and then not help them to bridge their way through it…shocking. Who knows, maybe there were parts we didn’t hear and he actually helped them. But if not, that wasn’t cool.
Adhering to her own mother’s advice to leave the past in the past, Beverly just wanted to move on. However I think parents forget that sometimes what a child wants is to be heard and most importantly acknowledged. Sweeping issues under a rug just makes people feel insignificant. Now don’t get me wrong…there is no benefit to harboring issues, but growth comes through understanding. Maybe that is what Anansa is looking for.
The family decided to sit down once again to talk about the America’s Next Top Model shoot. As Beverly tried to talk Anansa into cancelling her family photo she learned that David’s mom had given the couple the portrait as a wedding gift…a $7,000 value. Within the moment, Anansa mentioned how her mother didn’t even give them a card for their wedding to which Beverly pointed out that she gave her life. As Anansa laughed it off, I knew that it was bigger than that. Not even a card? You can see how all of these disappointments have stacked up. Feeling abandoned and then ridiculed for her weight and then invisible. It hasn’t been easy for Anansa. Luckily her husband, David, was there for her. While her mom headed off to LA for the shoot, David took Anansa out on a date to try to cheer her up. It was dinner that changed everything. Take a look.
As the episode closed, Beverly’s mom, Gloria, and sister were heading out. As four generations sat together, Beverly got emotional about being a mom and a daughter. It seemed to have so much to do with her and Anansa’s current relationship. Anansa quickly pointed out that “if we didn’t have love, then why would we even be here working on it, right?” In the next breath, Gloria reminded them both that “Life goes on so let it go. Thank God for what you have.” Gratitude is so important. In fact I would say that it is vital for happiness. Hopefully both mother and daughter can find a way to live in that place more often.
As sweet as it ended the coming attractions show lots of drama. Get ready for more of Beverly’s Full House on Saturday at 10/9C…only on OWN!
