On the premiere episode we had the drama of mom and daughter moving in together, but this week it got even crazier and believe it or not….more dysfunctional. Communication issues continued to plague both mother and daughter. The faces may have been flawless, but the gestures weren’t. By the looks of things, this wasn’t going to be easy!
Anyone who watches the show can tell that Anansa and her mom love each other and truly want to get it right, but it isn’t easy when you are beginning a mother-daughter relationship as adults. As much as it appears that Beverly’s heart is in the right place…she isn’t really showing her selfless mothering side. For instance, Beverly led her daughter to believe they were doing a mother-daughter photo shoot to help Anansa get back into modeling after having the baby. BUT Beverly’s true intentions eventually bubbled to the top. It wasn’t a laid-back family shoot, it was serious business and all about Beverly’s wig line. Feeling a little tricked, Anansa did her best to hold it together and stay professional.
Understandably Anansa has her abandonment issues being raised by a supermodel mom who was always on the move. Yet, it appears Beverly still hasn’t slowed down long enough to show her that she matters. Don’t get me wrong…she is trying, but many of the gestures are falling flat. Before they even left for the shoot, Beverly bailed out of helping her daughter (a new mom) get everything packed for the trip and literally took off without her. Then without mention, they enjoyed their night before the shoot only to wake to more disappointment. Beverly told her daughter to grab some food and she’d pick her up at 11am. Well, things changed and Beverly didn’t bother to call or anything. Jumping into a can, Anansa dragged along the baby but tried to leave behind the anger. It just seemed Beverly wasn’t connected to her daughter at all. Although the excuses were sufficient, it still wasn’t cool. Anansa isn’t sure what to think and Beverly is in a different place in her life. She doesn’t have a child and really isn’t the kind of grandma to take over and help. But when she tells her daughter she will step up and doesn’t…it hurts her.
However, they are taking steps to make it better. Beverly hired a life coach, David, which actually seemed more like a therapist. He got straight to work over the phone and peeled away at the layers of hurt. Within a few minutes, Anansa revealed the pain she felt as a child seeing her mother making fun of her weight…something that she has carried her whole life. Suddenly “not feeling enough” was making more sense. With a supermodel mom, it couldn’t have been easy growing up with a healthy self-esteem and clearly she didn’t feel loved as she was. But with this reveal, we see both of these strong women open to sharing their thoughts. That is a great start!
Now of course the drama wasn’t confined to just Beverly and Anansa….the boys found their own inner divas. While Beverly tried to discuss her issues with her boyfriend, Brian, Anansa did her best to download with her husband, David. BIG mistake since he was lost in the game. There was no way she was going to get what she needed at that time. She should have just taken a bath and waited.
Especially since the guys got him a bit drunk leading to foolish talk that should have landed him the doghouse. More importantly we can’t forget Robert, Beverly’s house manager, who is slowing melting from the overloaded house. He is use to a quiet house filled with him, Bev and the dogs. Now, it is crazy!
Each episode I am drawn a little more into this incredible family and find myself already taking sides, like any sibling would. What I do know is that each of these characters are so unique, lovable and certain to bring us a full season of diva drama! Tune in next week for Beverly’s birthday Saturday at 10/9C…only on OWN!
