I am a single woman 55 almost 56 who is also a widow and a Ph.D psychologist and after almost 20 years in the same house and job I decided to move to be closer to my son. Now I am an educated consumer but have been totally conned in the moving game. I paid over 7,000 for a full service move and was subcontracted out and the story is unbelievable;. Much damage but upon really reading my logs of furniture all of it was listed as damaged in every way possible so no claim would hold up. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and we shall see how it works out. I have pictures of the mess they left both at the home I moved from and of the mess they left me with which I am still sorting out. I believe this is happening all over the country and I want to help make the public aware of the scam since I believed I was acting in a way that would assure my possessions would arrive in good condition. I am blessed with being able to articulate the issue and having the willingness to make it public. I did register with moving scam.com but I really feel that my experience is happening every day and it is almost diabolical in nature because the way it was handled included listing everything in my home that I paid $7,000 to move was damaged and interestingly it is not all damaged now! Also after the $6000 plus was paid in cashiers checks they insisted I leave my home for another $800 in cashiers checks and my belongings were unloaded in a way that was chaotic. I have pictures and witnesses and as I said I believe this is bigger than my incident! I believe that this is a daily experience for many people and I wish to expose the scam. I paid for a professional move and not only did I not get that but they have every base covered so that you cannot make a claim. I am pursuing this through the Better Business Bureau but the public needs to be warned. Moving is a vulnerable time especially for a single older woman. I would be interested in exposing this scam and also working on other scams that people perpetrate. As I said I believe I have this one fairly well documented.
Wow…what a story. I agree … I think that this is going on more and more and I know that you are not alone in this situation! But…since we are not affiliated with OWN or Oprah, we have no way other than posting this message to “get it out there.” I would suggest that you go to the OWN website or find their address in LA to submit your show/story ideas. It may or may not be a fit for what she’s doing…but they should be able to help you there. Good luck!
