The episode opened up with the final fitting…and Naomi was like a princess. Known for her outrageous dresses, one of her dresses was tweaked to become the “Fairy God Mother” dress with wings. All I can think is that Wynonna is going to flip out!
Wynonna continued to let us know that she was in charge. Struggling with her team, she admitted gets overwhelmed. With tensions high, the slightest disagreement with her mom threatens to set Wynonna off. THEN her mom mentioned that after her first costume change…“I’m gonna have wings”. The look on Wynonna’s face was priceless. She looked around as if to see if anyone else heard what she had…maybe it was simply a hallucination from the stress, or she was being punked! But she wasn’t and Naomi was serious. Thinking it was a joke, Wynonna appeared to put a stop to that fast.
Good news for the crew and the viewers…there were 2 tour buses! I think both of them deserved a place to breath and rejuvenate. It may be essential to their survival on this whirlwind tour. With her puppies in tow, Naomi and her husband headed out. She shared her story of being sick and her recovery. Having been diagnosed with only years to live, to her…it was a miracle.
Wynonna did a little sharing of her own. She spoke of her “food soothing” which began when she was famous and all alone. Terrified of the success at 18, she ate to protect herself from intimacy and being vulnerable. As she boarded the bus with her children, Elijah and Grace, the trip offically began!
So this episode nutty moment for Naomi….she scheduled for someone to come onto the tour bus to bring her brain back into harmony. Yes….that wasn’t a typo. Realizing she came “from a family of stone cold secrets”, Naomi found she was reliving her childhood torments over and over. Apparently Lee from the Brain State would help to relax her by hooking her brain up to a computer to monitor the waves. Don’t judge people….you never know! I can’t help but think she should be talking to a therapist and her daughter to really dig it out. Pretending since she was a child, Naomi was willing to do whatever it takes to feel healthier emotionally.
After falling out of her bed onto marble and being unable to get her hairdryer to work….Wynonna tried to pull herself out her bad mood. She could feel the pressure. After Naomi flew around rehearsal with her “Fairy God Mother” wings, Wynonna and the team decided the costume needed to wait until later in the show….not the first costume change. Naomi simply said “I can’t”. Wanting to limit the distractions and focus on the beauty of mom and daughter, the team was able to convince Naomi of the change….rather easily. Good job, Naomi.
As the day of the show arrived, Wynonna found herself a bit over-stimulated. As she went to give her mother “notes” on her singing I thought this might get ugly and wondered if Dr. Ted was nearby. But Wynonna wasn’t done….she HATED the prop design for the scene. Aware that she was already on a bad mood, the farmyard scene almost pushed her over the edge.
Not performing for over 10 years together, the Judds began their show with a little prayer. It never hurts! Being that Wynonna has performer’s anxiety, she fears she may have a nervous breakdown….that might end up on YouTube! Instead, they rocked it! As Naomi told the crowd to “get comfortable and let’s have some fun”, I watched as Wynonna and Naomi looked more comfortable than I had seen them yet on this series. It was wonderful.
Later Naomi spoke about her admiration of Wynonna, saying that “she entertains me more than anybody. I’ve got the best seat in the house”. For Wynonna it was a bit of an “A HA” moment. Time had passed since they last were on stage together, her children were now older and she was not the same woman she had been. As they made their way off stage, Naomi nervously mentioned she had forgotten a few parts and Wynonna simply told her “don’t worry…it’s OK”. A great way to end the episode…coming full circle for them both.
I feel so sorry for both Wynonna and her sister Ashley, to have lived with this kind of a mother. This mother cares about no one but herself. My God bless both of them.
It must be hard for all of them. I’m not sure if Naomi is completely self-focused, of if she is the way she is because of all the trauma in her life. I have know alcoholics in my life that have similar attitudes where everything is all about them. Then again, I have known people who have endured incredible pain and truama and find themselves just trying to survive. For some, surival mode makes it difficult to think about anyone else. I watch Naomi as she becomes disconnected and I have to wonder. Regardless, I feel sorry for all of them. No one can be happy in that space. I only hope they all find inner peace and are able to realize the past is not now.
