OWN….You’re KILLING Me!

Where do I even begin? I guess I should start off by saying that I love what Oprah and her incredible team are trying to accomplish with the Oprah Winfrey Network. The original programming has been great and the documentaries have been outstanding. The problem…they leave me hungry for more. Now for most networks that would be a great thing. Give the people what they want and they will come back every day.

However, OWN seems to be going through its awkward stage and taking us all along for the ride. First the programs were there….and then disappeared completely, leaving us all wondering if or when they’d return. Soon came the wave of reruns and a plethora of “Discovery Health” programs. Was this OWN or Discovery Health? You’re losing me. As I try to hold on, I am hit with an incredibly dry spell where there is nothing OWN on at all. Clearly we love OWN and are blogging on the network, but they aren’t leaving us much!

Now with the announcement of the new shows for October, I realize I have a lot of free time on my hands. With only a couple of documentaries and a random show here or there, there is nothing going at OWN for months. What is going on?

I can’t help but wonder what is happening over at Oprah’s namesake network? I have made the suggestion before and feel the need to repeat it with boldness – WE WOULD MAKE A PERFECT FOCUS GROUP FOR YOU. It is clear that something needs to change quickly….before people give up. I didn’t mind holding on while it all comes together, but months of no real new programming???? You are killing me! Let me help you….seriously.

  1. I agree with you totally. When OWN programming first came on, I compared it to the finest chef opening a new restaurant. We already knew that the food was going to be good because we had “tasted it” a their previous restaurant. But when their “new restaurant” opened, it only offered 3 or 4 brand new entrees (new series). The rest were old recipes that other restaurants had used (reruns or old movies). Plus, the restaurant only served new entrees and was only open on a few prime days, like Sunday nights–between 8-11pm. Why open a restaurant when your menu wasn’t ready? I LOVE Oprah and her staff and the producers and HARPO and everything they stand for, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out why they put the cart before the horse. I think the Sunday night programming has been great…and the Chaz documentary was outstanding. The rest, not so much…but I’m waiting for Rosie’s show and hoping for the best.
