Family unity is not easy for the best of us, but when you hear about two people opening up their hearts and homes to 10 kids who are part of “the system” and offering them a forever home, it touches your heart. This is exactly what the new program on OWN last weekend, 10 Kids 2 Dads, has brought to the network. It offers a look into a home that has changed every single life that resides there. While many take for granted the family unit that they are a part of, this show reminds us just how important it is to have those connections.
In each episode we are offered a glimpse into the normal lives of this modern family. As we watched and tweeted with the East and West coast we found an outpouring of love for the show and a few questioning why two gay men would have 10 boys…no girls. So while we don’t know the answer for this family, here is what we do know from a sister who is in the Social Work profession of helping kids find a safe place to land. Many families of kids are split up when they enter the foster system. When the one sure thing that you have is your brother or sister, it’s not always easy to place them in a forever home with each other. This is heartbreaking. Also, many states foster systems only allow same-sex parents to adopt same-sex kids. Crazy as it may be and while it’s not clear how this family came together, this is how it works in some places.
So while people are curious about this amazing family because they “look different” from what they might be used to seeing, there is really only one thing that stands out – these kids have been able to stay together with their siblings and join a forever home and family. They celebrate birthdays, take driving lessons and set up lemonade stands. They support each other as best as they can. “I’ve never turned away a kid that they bring to me,” says one of the dads. There are lessons and lightness to be learned from this show on OWN. While they may not look like your own family, take a closer look because maybe some of the little things you see will inspire you and have you saying, “Love. This is what a family looks like.”
While the show is no where to be found on the OWN schedule right now, we hope these kinds of shows stay on their radar. This show brought sunshine to the night for OWN.
