With almost a month of OWN programming filled by reruns, it would have been easy to miss the premier of Celine: 3 Boys and a New Show. But I hope you didn’t because this newest documentary special on the Oprah Winfrey Network was truly a gem.
In fact, at times I thought it might actually qualify as OWN’s first foreign film due to the French to English subtitles flying around. With two docu-series about singing sensations under OWN’s belt, I was expecting a tweaked version of the same story. Instead the documentary showed us a soft, vulnerable and normal side of mega-star that her fans rarely get a chance to see.
No one can argue that when Celine hits the stage, she is magical. Off-stage she is a mother, a wife and woman trying her best to balance life and stardom. Often gracing the camera with little to no makeup, it was clear that Celine wasn’t your average diva.
Only 12 weeks after having twins, Celine headed to rehearsals to prepare for her new Las Vegas show. What amazed me is that she appeared so grounded. Once she hit the house, she was a mom and a wife and Rene was a husband and father…there was no place for business. Now, I imagine that at times it sneaks in, but it is wonderful that they are doing their best to find some normalcy.
Just like any mom or wife, Celine worked hard to find balance and the hidden extra hours within the day. She had her quirks and exhausted moments which generally ended in laughter. Whether she was shocking the crew that she was able to make it to an early morning rehearsal, either feeding the twins or pumping milk, dropping her son off at school while she sorted through school papers….she was a mom trying to do her best and have it all.
Her life may not be perfect but she won’t complain. One minute she is being fit for her couture costumes with people from Versace and Armani and then she is supporting her son as he films a “James Bond” piece for her show. Now as a side, I must admit I adore her 10-year old son, RC. While double checking to be sure she had everything she needed for Vegas, she reminded him to grab what he needed. He told her he had his stuff for school and she informed him that she was giving him one day off while they were in Chicago. His reaction…follow mom around and ask why. Not “yea” or “cool”, but “why” and “no, that doesn’t make sense”? You have to love him!
Leaving home in Juniper Florida, Celine and the family set out for Vegas…via Chicago for a quick stop at the Oprah Winfrey Show. Celine holds the record for the most appearances on Oprah’s show…27 appearances to be exact. After the quick stopover, they arrived in Las Vegas to thousands of chanting fans and flashlights. With only 22 days to the opening of her show that has been missing from Vegas’ Colosseum for 4 years Celine was back and ready to work.
Rene was able to give us a quick family tour of everyone that had been a part of the team for so many years. Less than 2 weeks until the show began, Celine still found time for work and family. The day after a few final touches on her couture dresses, the Celine, Rene and family prepared the twins for their baptisms. In each family encounter we witness an overwhelming amount of love.
Then without even a change of outfit, Celine headed from the church directly to rehearsal. For me….it was a reminder that no matter how busy life can get, you always have the ability to carve out time for what is important. Watching Celine, I realized the key to being able to do it all is….you must keep moving. I swear if she sat down she may not get up for days.
Dressed and ready, Celine takes a moment to throw kisses to photos of her kids, kiss her husband and remind him to be careful not to fall as he exits….all of this with the roar of premier night crowd. She became a master of the ebb and flow of stardom and family. As she took to the stage, she was beautiful and clearly comfortable within her space and life.
The show was underway, life was rolling along and even a hint of more kids to come. One thing was certain, Celine was amazing. Balancing a marriage and family, parenting, maximizing every second she has and then singing to sold-out shows, she did it all…impressively.
Walking away from this documentary I am reminded to find the time to do what matters….it will all work out. I just need to have faith in that. And as a bonus, I just may have learned a few French words in the process.
