Rosie began the show addressing a topic that is on everyone is talking about…the JCPenney and Ellen DeGeneres issue. As many viewers knew, JCPenney was getting a lot of heat from a hate group wanting them to drop Ellen as a spokeswoman. However, they stood by Ellen and refused to be bullied by the hate group cloaked as caring mothers. I didn’t want to spend an entire article ranting about this kind of behavior (because you all know I can) but I had to say this.
Each day I get up and try to be the best person I can be. I am careful of my words to not offend because I realize the power they have. I alone am responsible for what I put out in the world. So when I watched as so-called pious people preached hate, I recognized they are not speaking for my God. When I saw ignorant people judging others for something they didn’t understand, I realized they do not know their place in my God’s world. It was simple…our job was to love one another, not judge one another.
A hate group of moms trying to demean a gay person who was simply living their truth might as well be wearing a white hood. Politicians telling people that someone was a sinner for being who God created, they might as well have a swastika on their foreheads. That is how I feel. It IS that simple. Hate breeds hate and in my world…that is not God. That’s the other guy.
So the question is what can we do about it? So many people listen as these fanatics babble and debate illogically….afraid to even engage the insanity. But this is the time to engage in the conversation, especially if you aren’t gay. Our sisters and brothers need to know we see the lunacy and that we have their backs. It is more important than ever that our voices overshadow the hate. So, when you hear someone make a rude comment or someone spread hateful words, speak up LOUDLY and FIRMLY even if you have to find a mountain top to do it.
Countering the sadness we were reminded of, the adorable Ali Wentworth joined the show. She weaved stories of childhood, her rebellious streak and how she ended up married to a man that she claims her mother loved more. As I watched, the phrase “you always go home” came to mind as Ali went into details about swimming with Henry Kissinger, having her phones tapped, rebelling by heading to Hollywood only to find herself drawn to a man enmeshed in the world’s politics….like coming home.
Getting engaged after only a few months, their relationship was still flourishing after 10 years. With a new book out, Ali in Wonderland, life seemed perfect. Relving comedic moments of In Living Color, humor was obviously important in her life. As I sat and watched this elegant woman talk about farting on TV, it’s clear she was comfortable flowing in and out of normal societal boundaries…..and I loved it. Listen in as she discussed how she parents with comedy.
Following Ali, Rosie brought back a fan that we were introduced to back in January. He was the young boy who was teased for being his fantastic self…a designer who is sure to take the world by storm. Cameras played back showing us Ben’s trip to NY to meet with costume designers. Working with Tony Award winning, Bobby Pearce, Ben walked around the fabric room in awe. Working with the greats in design, Ben had no problem holding his own.
