Rosie showed a serious side of “The Rosie Show” yesterday. Not only is she a hilarious comic, but she still has what it takes to deliver candid and riveting One-on-One interviews. The first in this series was with her longtime friend and comedian, Kathy Griffin. Normally seen as the woman who can’t resist ending each moment with a punch line, Kathy unveiled a very vulnerable place for the world to see. Don’t get me wrong…there were still plenty of laughs.
Choosing to make the interview more intimate, the audience wasn’t present which immediately brought a level of closeness. Despite watching Kathy for years, I think this is the first time I really SAW her. Discussing everything from being banned from The View and at one time Letterman, her New Year’s Eve disrobing, liposuction, her Emmys…all the way to being bullied in school and her feelings of worthlessness. It was a rollercoaster hour.
Kathy grew up the youngest of 5 siblings as lower-middle-class in Oak Park, a suburb out of Chicago. Although she was raised with alcoholics in her family, Kathy claims she doesn’t drink at all. However, she does struggle with bulimia and body image issues. It doesn’t surprise me after she told us stories of being called a dog in school and was actually barked at. I was saddened by the story of how a nun saw it happen and turned away and ignored it. When adults view children being picked on, have no idea how important their response is….in that moment when a child needed someone to stand up for them, she was treated as if she didn’t matter. Memories from childhood affect each day. She went on to tell a story of when Jay Leno made a rude, joking comment landed her in tears.
No wonder she has issues. What I love is that she opens them up which in turn opens up the conversation. For instance, Kathy has admitted on many occasions what many women take great care to hide in Hollywood…plastic surgery.
With each turn in the interview something new was revealed. One of the most shocking moments was hearing her talk about being degraded during wardrobe fittings at “Suddenly Susan” for being overweight as a size 6. Seriously! When will we stop caring about all of the superficial stuff?
The interview went so well that Rosie and her team decided they had to do a second day. So we get to hear even more today starting at 7/6C on OWN. Don’t miss out!
