Before I even begin….how cute is Kristin? I mean seriously. Starting off with a bedazzled phone for Rosie, they both were trapped for in a few moments of mutual admiration. Talking about twitter, Target, and becoming a foodie. It was as if we were sitting at a dining table with two good friends catching up.
Hitting the most important topics first, Rosie asked Kristin how her mother was doing. After a few bouts with cancer, her mother is doing well. She shared the story of finding out her mother had breast cancer. Moments like these really put things in perspective.
The story was touching. Seven years ago, my sisters and I made the decision to quit lucrative jobs in the Silicon Valley in order to slow down and take more time with our mother. Now, she is healthier and happier than ever. The quality of her life improved ten-fold…and that is far more important than weekly shopping sprees at Nordstrom. Best choice I ever made.
As many people know, Kristin was a gift to her parents. Although they may not be her biological parents, they are her mother and father in every way that matters. During the interview, Kristin opened up about how she feels about her birth mother and being adopted.
Taking us back the beginning as a bunny in The Nutcracker, Kristin told us her dream was to be a ballerina when she was young. However, being so small and unable to fit into the costume, she became the bunny. Improving early on, she stole the hearts of the audience. Reminding Ro of her daughter Vivi, Ro let us in on the big news. Vivi is going to be in Annie as the orphan who does the cartwheel. Too fun for the Ro family! Kristin has come a long way from being a “smart bunny”. Now the world adores her. She keeps it real to keep herself grounded and has some great advice for young people trying to get into the business.
“Concentrate of being great and being not famous, because fame will let you down. But when you are proud of what your work is, that nobody can take that from you.” This is great rule for everyone. Surprising to many but Kristin has had her battle with depression. I think it is easy for people under the spotlight to be prone to this. The highs and lows inevitably lead to higher highs and lower lows. It can take a toll on you if you aren’t grounded and on top of it. Family, faith, counseling and occasionally meds, she has taken care of herself. “I think that people have to do it, make themselves better however it works best for them.” What amazes me is the judgment people pass on those who are going through depression. It isn’t about complaining about life or having lack. It can be debilitating. People aren’t looking for a pity party…they are looking to feel better in their lives. Luckily I haven’t had this issue but I am smart enough to not judge.
When talking about twitter, Kristin mentioned how she could read a lot of positive messages and see one negative and it affect her. This is something I have brought up before because I have seen Rosie and Oprah even do this. Instead of engaging with those who are negative, engage with those who spread light and lift others.
When I was young everything was simple. Things were clear-cut to me due to my ignorance. I was open, but stubborn. Then in college, it all became more unclear. There were so many possible answers and I could understand the differences in opinions. I knew the truth was usually somewhere in between. Now that I am older, it has become more clear-cut but this time it is mostly about intention and energy. If it brings goodness and light, lean into it. If it doesn’t, avoid it or work to change it. It’s simple. By replying online to negative tweets, you give power to negative energy. Instead double-down on the positive in an attempt to erase it.
Now for those of you who didn’t get to see Pushing Up Daisies with Kristin, I have to tell you that you missed a quirky, well-written show that was ahead of its time. It was fantastic…but like all good things, ABC cancelled it because it wasn’t the cash cow they had hoped for….despite receiving 17 Emmy nods and 7 wins in its short time on television. Shows like Cheers and Friends never would have become popular if the same approach was taken. I’m so tired of quality television being pushed aside for fast-food, easy money reality shows. Coming down from my soap box I am so excited to see that Kristin is going to be on TV again. YEAH! Her new show, GCB – Good Christian Belles, formerly called Good Christian Bitches, will be premiering on ABC March 4th. Please ABC, give it a chance.
As the interview was winding down, conversations shifted around about favorite candy, late night tweeting and Rosie’s kids. Singing commercials it was clear that these friends watch way too much TV. You could totally imagine them talking on the phone watching commercials and laughing. LOVE these gals! Comparing her to “human prozac”, Kristin is just such a delight and so uplifting. Ending the show with “Explain This Please”, Rosie pulled out photos she found of Kristin on the internet. It was a hilarious bit. Check it out!
