The show opened with everyone on their feet…for good reason. The legendary comedian Phyllis Diller graced Rosie’s stage and the audience was packed with at least 150 stand-up comics. When people talk about her life I am always astonished at all she has accomplished. At 37 years old, the mother of 5 began her career as a stand-up comic. Something tells me she was entertaining everyone who came across her path her whole life. Still working the crowd as she weaved through the stories of her life….she is amazing! Rarely do we get a peek at the incredible iconic stars of the past. I am always elated that a new generation gets a glimpse how incredible the past has been to us…how it has shaped previous generations. I miss the elegance of past performers. For some reason that smooth, classy humor isn’t as prevalent. I am sorry about that young ones….you missed some great stuff! My advice is to find some clips of Phyllis Diller, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball…all the greats.
She was hilarious! It was incredible to see how she has all of her jokes indexed in a HUGE library file case like the old Dewey decimal system ones (old schoolers you know what I am talking about). Ideal day – that room, a comfy chair, lots of Starbucks and someone to read them back and forth with!
At 94 years old, Phyllis continued to wow her crowd. She shared stories of old friends like Bob Hope, her love of cars, writing for Jack Paar and how Colonel Sanders liked her legs! As a special surprise, Rosie brought several of Phyllis’ past secretaries to the show. I can only imagine how wonderful it was for her to see them again…unless she had fired any of them – then, not so good!
As Rosie came back from each break we all got to see a little piece of the documentary “Good Night We Love You” on Phyllis. The funniest piece was her talking about how she shaves her eyebrows off and puts them where she wants them. TOO funny.
Rosie then opened up the mic to audience members allowing almost a brief opportunity to soak in even more wisdom from the woman who helped make it all possible for women to be doing stand-up.
It was a wonderful tribute to a truly iconic legend. Check out a few more video clips from the show here. Thank you Rosie and OWN for taking the time to honor a true pioneer and incredibly funny woman, Ms. Phyllis Diller!
It’s wonderful to see Phyllis Diller on The Rosie Show. Years ago, I attended a UCLA Extension course and heard Ms. Diller give a talk. I remember to this day her inspiring words. She encouraged people in the audience to believe in themselves–to truly believe–because such belief would enable them to realize their dreams. Today I have one published novel and another one on the way. Thank you, Oprah and Rosie, for paying tribute to this generous and gifted lady.
