After almost 6 weeks of constant in-your-face togetherness, the therapy tour came to a close. Both Naomi and Wynonna took a moment to look back and appreciate the time they together, but worry about what lies ahead. Naomi realized the tour had been “transformative” for her and Wy. Closer and less judgmental, the Judds seemed to have really used this time to heal. However, Wynonna feared she may lose this closeness with her mom now that they are done touring.
In a session with Ted, Wynonna share what she had learned…“how many years we’ve wanted to be right rather than be loved and now we want to be loved”. Ted acknowledged they were changing the Judd’s legacy…”changed the direction of how this family is moving.” He helped them realize so much…that “you’re not responsible for what you don’t know, but once you do, you are”. As we watched mother and daughter, there was a lightness and a peacefulness that hadn’t been seen in the past episodes. It was as if they had their “O” moments and it clicked.
In this final episode, Wynonna presented a song to her mother, “Love It Out Loud”. Her and Cactus Moser, her boyfriend and fellow musician, had worked on it for some time and she wanted to give it to her as a “love offering”. In doing so, Wynonna fought back her feelings of insecurity with singing such a vulnerable and personal song. With Cactus and his mom, Bev, joining the posse this week, the timing was perfect. With love flowing all around, Wy was ready to say “I love you…the Wynonna way”. Of course, OWN timed it just right…airing it on Mother’s Day!
Terrified and vulnerable, Wynonna had no idea how her mother would react. Naomi came on stage looking as if she was afraid she was about to be sacrificed (later she shared that she thought Cactus was going to propose to her daughter on stage). Naomi was sitting there on stage with Wynonna and Cactus. Not big on surprises, she was about to be blown over by a wave of love from the one person she had struggled the most with. Wy announced to the crowd that she was giving her mother an affirmation through song. She asked “do you think you can handle it? You might want to sit down” as Naomi looked as if she was about to pass out.
With a history of unpleasant surprises, Naomi was nervous about what her daughter was about to share with the world. As she fidgeted on her stool as if she was looking for somewhere to escape, Wynonna began singing. After a few versus hit the air, Naomi realized this wasn’t going to be a public BBQ and finally was able to breathe. Overwhelmed by the love, there was no going back…the Judds were on their way to a healthier and more respectful bond. A new beginning of a connection that will hopefully continue to only get stronger. This tour had been all about connecting through music and it worked.
After the final concert, Wy collapsed into her mother’s arms like a child who just needed a HUGE hug. “I gotcha” her mom tells her as they hold each other. A touching end to an emotionally exhausting tour. As they all sit back and think back to the tour, Naomi and Wy share that they were proud of each other. Ted recognized how present they both were. Naomi was proud her daughter had stretched herself and was so open. THEN she said “I think more than anything, you were there for me to bare witness to, all of you guys were, to what I went through”….OH Naomi. As we watch reality hit Wynonna across the face after a night of bearing her soul, it was clear that Naomi was still a bit stuck on Naomi. One statement doesn’t ruin it all though…the Judds had healed a lot, they just weren’t quite done.
Three weeks later, the show picked back up with the ladies having lunch where we all learned a little something about Wynonna…she squeezes toothpaste into her mouth, not on the toothbrush. Yes, a little different. Joking about her super powers, Naomi told us she had bought a place in Florida, just as a retreat. As Wynonna wiped the tears, as only a Judd does with a big napkin and a good eye-roll, she can’t help but think her mother is getting older and their time is precious. Soon after, Naomi shared that her husband asked her if she was ever going to confront her mother. Of course, Naomi quoted it as “do you plan on you and Wy going up to the house in Ashland?”. I’d totally try to pull someone in with me, too! Power in numbers people. BUT Naomi wasn’t the only one to share news.
Wynonna had decided to consider meeting her brother for the first time. Confronted by a cousin in an airport at the start of the tour, Wynonna couldn’t go there. But now that she was home, she considered it. Calling him her “bonus brother”, Wy shared that her brother Michael had children that were around the age of hers…her niece and nephew. Feeling healthier, Wynonna was ready to deal with the truth. No more drama…just working through “the crap”!
With the season ending, I can’t help but get the strong impression that there will be a season 2. There is still so much left open for the viewers….her father’s family, trips to Florida, confronting Naomi’s mom, Cactus? PLUS, for those of you who don’t live tweet with us during the shows, we have some news! Wynonna and Naomi tweeted it up with the fans during the last episode and Wynonna actually asked the fans if they would be there if there was a season 2. I’m thinking it’s happening people! We all know love can build a bridge, but is it enough to protect them from another crazy season? I’ll keep you posted.
I have been a fan of the Judds since they started. Last nite had the privilege of seeing Wy perform with our San Diego Symphony under the stars. It was outstanding. Please do a season 2, you will have MANY viewers. I was impressed with how many folks watched it that I ran into last night.
