The miracle detectives kick off this segment in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a photo of what resembles an angel in a hospital corridor. The image was caught on a hospital monitor in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Chelsea Banton, a special needs patient, was in serious trouble. She had double pneumonia, a collapsed lung, kidneys that had failed and a staph infection. She had very little chance of survival. The doctors informed her mother it was time to make a decision on taking her daughter off life support. Her mother made the most difficult decision any parent would ever have to make. At that time, an image of an angel appeared on the monitor. Almost immediately, Chelsea recovered and it was unexplainable. Did an angel come to her rescue? Was this her guardian angel?
Chelsea Banton had struggled her whole life….in and out of the hospital. She is a fighter. However, she had never been this sick. The doctors told her mother her daughter’s lungs could no longer support her. After three months in the hospital, her mother knew it was in God’s hands and decided to take her daughter off life support. As soon as the machine went off, she immediately improved. The nurses were amazed!
Dr. V and Randall interviewed Chelsea’s nurse who stated they had never seen the vision before….and hadn’t since. She noted that everyone in room was calm after they experienced the angel. Some of the nurses believed it was truly a miracle. Dr. V wondered if the calmness felt once the angel appeared actually was the catalyst that helped to heal Chelsea. The stress had been high prior to that and after the angel appeared, everyone was more at peace…Chelsea could have easily picked up on it and responded positively.
Since Dr. V felt the image was a major part of the case, she had a video expert recreate the scene to see if it was possible to get a similar image. He did! As the sun came thru a window, the image was reflected. Not exactly the same, but really close. Since the brain processes images based on lines and features, it was easy to see how the image could resemble an angel. This was enough to draw doubt for Dr. V. She didn’t believe that it was a miracle that Chelsea got well…it can happen. Even Randall found the video expert’s evidence persuasive, however he had a hard time discounting that the image appeared exactly when it needed to….to him the timing was important making it a miracle.
So I ask….are we such a society of skeptics that we look to disprove all chances of miracles in our lives?
